Everybody knows that extra virgin olive oil is healthy. I love using olive oil and all the benefits that go with it but that’s not what I want to share with you. I want to tell you about all the different ways I use olive oil from cooking to shoe polishing.
Here is a list of things I use olive oil for on a regular basis. I have tried and used all of these applications of olive oil and love them because they are all natural without any added chemicals. Best of all, they have proven efficient for me and make me feel excellent about not using any chemicals. To make it handy and easier to use I put the olive oil in a small glass bottle with a dripping cap.
- Treatment for nail hardening
If you have brittle and soft nails that tend to split try this simple recipe and you’ll see improvement in about two weeks.You’ll need: 1 cup of warm water, 2 tablespoons of sea salt, one slice of lemon, a few drops of olive oil
What to do: Dissolve the sea salt in the water and put your fingertips up to your nails in this mixture for ten minutes. Afterwards rub your nails with a slice of lemon and leave for 5 minutes. After 5 minutes wash your hands with water, dry with a towel and rub a few drops of olive oil into your nails.Do this treatment every day or at least every other day and you’ll see big improvement in about 10-14 days. The salt nurtures and hardens the nail with important minerals. The lemon bleaches the nail and slows down the growth of cuticles. The olive oil at the end hydrates the nail. This is best done before you go to sleep. Since I have quite soft nails I usually repeat this treatment about twice a year when I notice that my nails begin to split.
- Eye makeup remover
I have accidentally found out that olive oil can be an excellent eye make up remover. When I ran out of store bought make up remover I hesitantly tried to use olive oil to wipe my mascara away. I wasn’t quite sure if it was OK to use it on my eyes but it totally worked!
It takes away the mascara and eye make up quite easily without any vigorous rubbing. Since then I switched to olive oil as my make up remover because it feels more natural and does the job as well as the store bought stuff. I use it on ordinary cotton buds and your skin won’t be fatty afterwards!
- Moisturizer for your skin
I use olive oil instead of body milk or lotion. My skin is normal to dry and the olive oil helps it to feel moistened. Any tension and scratching due to dry skin goes away after using olive oil as a moisturizer. You’ll need about 3 tablespoons of olive oil for your whole body. Your skin will take it in quite fast (5-10 minutes) just don’t put on your best blouse immediately after scrubbing olive oil on your skin since it can leave marks. I do this 2-3 times a week after taking a bath in the evening.
- Hair mask for strengthening hair
This is a mask for all hair types and makes your hair feel strong and healthy. I use it about twice a month.You’ll need: 1 teaspoon cinnamon , 1 egg yolk, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons yoghurt, 1 teaspoon natural honey
What to do: Just mix all the ingredients together and apply the mixture into your hair. If you like wrap it in plastic and put a towel over that. The extra heat will help the mask to penetrate the hair better. Leave it for 15-20 minutes. Afterwards wash it out thoroughly with shampoo.My hair is middle length, so if you have very long hair you might need to double the ingredients. The result is strong and shiny hair. I love that this mask is completely natural without any added additives and ingredients which names I can’t even pronounce. Also I almost always have those ingredients at home and if not all of them can be bought at any store.
- Peeling for the skin
I don’t use this quite as often but when I do it leaves my skin completely silky and soft.You’ll need: 3 tablespoons olive oil, 2 tablespoons caster sugar
What to do: Simply mix the sugar and oil together and apply it as a peeling on you skin.You can add a few drops of lemon juice if you would like to add a scent to the peeling.
- Preventing stretchmarks in pregnancy
I used this religiously in my pregnancy and I didn’t get one stretch mark. Also this little massage I did every evening when I was pregnant relaxed me and helped go away the itching sensation of a growing belly.
Simply take some pure extra virgin olive oil between your palms and rub it into your belly and buttocks. I’ve also experimented with a mixture of pure sweet almond and olive oil. Simply mix the same amount of both oils in one bottle. I liked this because it was easy to use and completely natural without any byproducts.
- Help for red and irritated skin around your nose
I love to use this since it makes the feeling of burning red skin you get from frequent nose wiping go away immediately. I use this also on my son since he was born.You’ll need: 100 gr olive oil, 20 gr beeswax, small disinfected container (you can wash it and disinfect it with a few sprays of alcohol)
What to do: Put the olive oil in a small pot and heat on low slowly until it gets warm. Don’t leave it to get to hot or to it’s smoking point- it’s enough to be warm. Put the beeswax in the warm olive oil and stir until the wax is resolved. Pour this mixture into the container and leave to cool.Simply apply this natural balm on your irritated skin.You can get cosmetic grade natural beeswax in small bars from online shops.
- Shoe polish
You can use the above balm for shoe polish for leather shoes as well. It makes them go super shiny and adds a layer for water protection. It’s a good idea to rub this balm into your leather shoes on rainy days since it will give you added protection. Please note that this is only for shiny smooth leather shoes!
